26/4/13:One group of 15 students: team teaching with Mike Harwin. I prepared the students with kit and intro & Mike led the rest of the session with me as support.
10/5/13: One group 14, with teacher + trainee climbing instructor - session went fine. Hard to give feedback to student instructor Great sessions went really well. Lots of practical ways to give information, even the theory. Used a profiling form to determine learning from the beginning to the end of the day which worked well.
Follows FSRT, so will know students after 1 day.
In house course followed by L1 above
Currently 6 students from the college booked on
Developed the IDEAS sessions further and adapted to the needs of the groups. Fantastic sessions that worked really well, particularly the afternoon session. Group management & feedback were key to success as well as good planning.
Theory taught in a variety of ways from lecture to peer to peer; group work and so on. Revelation regarding the need to become skilful requires deliberate practice, which is what we ask students to do during their consolidation period between training and assessment & is done via the creation of a portfolio
Interesting sessions where I used the concept of IDEAS for various parts of the lessons, which worked with differing outcomes. All sessions planned and reviewed
10 students. First weekend planned and taught LTDP, Risk Assessments, Safety Brief + feedback to students in practice sessions + falgs & markers introduction (on the spot)
Short climbing sessions so straight into rope climbing
6 students - good course that hung together well. Safety session worked well with an active session to produce a safety brief. Day 1 pm at VKC for discovery spec boat session. Very cold weather affected learning time outside - this had to be managed.
11 students - interesting course. My main role was giving feedback to students. Looked at a typical L1 session and built it to a L2 session. Interesting thinking about memory (blogged).
Morning groups: 7 per group. Afternoon groups: 10 or 11 per group. A number of Polish speakers and varying levels of climbing ability
8 students, much more engaged than previous course, Designed and delivered Risk Assmt & Safety Brief using active teaching + as prev course Improved LTPD session.
11 students, bit of a pain! Reflection each day. I delivered LTPD - more actively than previously, Coach session demo. Safety Brief demo, delivered test paper, assmt of students & generally supported course director
12 students, 4 adults from Cornwall centre + rest from college, delivery of lecture for LTPD + lecture on hypothermia + assmts
